Choosing a POS
A point-of-sale system is the most important tool in a jewelry store: it handles the sales, the inventory, and the insight into your business. Here's how to choose the right one.
Key features for a jewelry store
Start with the features a jewelry store actually needs: inventory with full detail on stones, metals and custom designs, serialized and bulk, and a CRM with profiles, occasions and loyalty, custom orders, layaway, financing and returns, and reports on sales, inventory and customers, your online store in sync with the showroom, and staff tools: permissions, commissions and a time clock. Check the security: data encryption, PCI compliance for card payments, and secure logins.
Hardware
Plan the hardware: terminals, barcode scanners and receipt printers, cash drawers, customer-facing displays, and mobile devices for the floor.
Cloud vs on-premise
Then decide between cloud and on-premise. A cloud system works from anywhere, updates easily, and costs less up front, while an on-premise system gives you more control, with a higher upfront cost and ongoing maintenance.
Integration, support and growth
Check the integrations, with accounting, e-commerce and marketing tools. Make sure it's easy to learn, with real training and responsive support, and that it grows with you, to more stores, more users and more terminals.
The full cost
Understand the full cost: hardware and setup, subscription fees, transaction fees, and maintenance and upgrades. And before you decide, request a demo, read reviews from other jewelers, and ask for references.
